UPDATED 4/8/09, 6:00 PM The Fitting SessionThe most valuable piece of equipment in your golf bag is the putter. What raising the skill level of your aim, stroke, speed, distance and reading greens determines whether or not you make more putts and lower your scores.
What if you could aim accurately just about every time you take your address? It makes sense that the chances of missing putts would be significantly reduced. You would think the best way to improve aim is to train yourself to memorize aim, but the problem is aim can not be memorized. Aim changes with every slope, undulation and distance of every putt on every putting green. Be aware of misinterpretations of aim. Aiming the stripe on a golf ball or picking a spot in front of the ball may make a slight difference, but as soon as you look at your putter to make sure it's aiming at your spot or squared up to the line on the ball, another factor is thrown into the mix of a faulty routine for aim. Aim changes with every different putter you use. So finding a putter that you can aim more accurately is the most time efficient way to go.
What about the stroke, speed and distance? They are all related to aim. Once the aim is established, the stroke can be designed in accordance with aim so the path of the putter and the squareness of impact will more naturally adjust. Once the path and impact areimproved, the roll of the ball improves because sidespin is reduced at impact. Putts now become more consistent which will allow the body to initiate the proper speed and distance. How you see to read greens will be truer with the reduction of the influence of sidespin. The ball will track straighter and the true path of the break will be more easily revealed. The fitted putter will initiate the beginning of improving your skills at putting and help you continue to become a better player. |
